Skovgaard\u2019s views on national art around 1854"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The artist Peter Christian Skovgaard (1817\u201375) visualised Denmark as a land of clear, blue skies arched above idyllic landscapes revealing no signs of European revolutions, Schleswig wars or internal conflicts on the art scene. In the works of fellow artist Wilhelm Marstrand (1810\u201373), the mood ranges from cheerful scenes of Italian folk life to solemn history paintings. Marstrand\u2019s depictions also reveal little of the tensions that were such a prominent aspect of nineteenth-century Danish society\u2019s discussions on politics and art. Among these we find the professional controversy reportedly found on the Danish art scene, one which the newspaper <em>Dagbladet <\/em>described, in 1854\u201355, as a quarrel between two cliques: the \u2018National\u2019 and the \u2018Cosmopolitan\u2019 artists.<sup id=\"footnote-1\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"1\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\n&amp;lsquo;I forrige uge&amp;rsquo; [Last Week] in <em>Dagbladet<\/em> 03.04.1854 and &amp;lsquo;Om Kunstudstillingen I&amp;rsquo; [Concerning the Art Exhibition I] in <em>Dagbladet<\/em>, 27.04.1855. In 1854 the groupings are given the designations &amp;lsquo;Blonde&amp;rsquo; (F. Vermehren, H.W. Bissen, Constantin Hansen, J\u00f8rgen Sonne, J\u00f8rgen Roed, P.C. Skovgaard, Wilhelm Marstrand) and &amp;lsquo;Brunette&amp;rsquo; (J.L. Jensen, David Monies, Frederik Rohde, Niels Simonsen, G.E. Liebert, C.A. Schleisner, F.L Storch, J.V. Gertner). In 1855, these monikers were adjusted to &amp;lsquo;National&amp;rsquo; and &amp;lsquo;Cosmopolitan&amp;rsquo;. Art history often use the term &amp;lsquo;the Europeans&amp;rsquo; for the Cosmopolitan group, but this concept was not used by <em>Dagbladet<\/em>.\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In 1854, the newspaper specifically named fifteen artists as exponents of the two factions, among them Marstrand and Skovgaard, who were described as being part of the National clique. The painters had not chosen to appear on this list themselves; they were assigned their places by <em>Dagbladet<\/em>\u2019s unnamed writer on the basis of their art, their prominent positions as exhibiting artists and their personal affiliations. The importance of their political leanings can also be inferred by looking at the networks and media to which the relevant artists are linked. Historiographic studies have shown that over time, this division into cliques has become crucial to the general definition of who was considered \u2018in\u2019 and \u2018out\u2019 in Danish art history, and that this dichotomous view forms the backdrop for the canon that has since prevailed.<sup id=\"footnote-2\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"2\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nSee e.g. Karl Madsen (ed.): <em>Kunstens historie i Danmark,<\/em> Alfred Jacobsen, 1901&amp;ndash;1907; Henrik Bramsen: <em>Ny Dansk Kunsthistorie bd. 3. The charting of the traces left by <em>Dagbladet<\/em> in twentieth-century historiography was done as an unpublished part of the research project <em>Art and the Formation of National Identities<\/em>, Aarhus University 2017&amp;ndash;21, from which this article originates, too.\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Danish art history has been remiss in addressing the Cosmopolitan artists, both at the museums and in literature, but interest in these excluded artists has been on the rise ever since various turns within academia since the 1980s have demanded a more diverse perspective on the past.<sup id=\"footnote-3\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"3\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nSee e.g.: Charlotte Christensen and Kasper Monrad: <em>De ukendte guldaldermalere<\/em>, Kunstforeningen, 1982; Gertrud Oelsner: <em>En f\u00e6lles forestillet nation. Many of these artists were presented at the exhibition <em>Danish Golden Age. World-class art between disasters, <\/em>the National Gallery of Denmark, 2019.\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">3<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Marstrand and Skovgaard were both listed as exponents of the National clique, despite their differing perceptions of what national art really was and should be used for. While Marstrand and Skovgaard are part of the category of artists who have been regularly addressed in Danish art history, the studies conducted so far have primarily applied an art-historical focus and can be usefully supplemented by a cultural-historical contextualisation. In addition, the rigid dichotomy of National and Cosmopolitan artists has not prompted anything in the way of a critical comparison <em>within<\/em> the group of supposedly National artists.<\/p>\n<p>This is perhaps surprising, given that as far back as 1905, the influential art historian Karl Madsen (1855-1938) pointed out that Marstrand\u2019s conception of the <em>distinctly Danish<\/em> aspect of Danish art differed from the general conception of \u2018the national\u2019 that <em>Dagbladet <\/em>attributed to one of the cliques, an outlook particularly spearheaded by the art historian Niels Lauritz H\u00f8yen (1798\u20131870) in the mid-nineteenth century.<sup id=\"footnote-4\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"4\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nKarl Madsen: <em>Wilhelm Marstrand 1810-1873<\/em>, Kunstforeningen, 85-86\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">4<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Seen in the light of the supposed cliques presented by <em>Dagbladet <\/em>in 1854, how should we understand what constituted \u2018National\u2019 art in Marstrand and Skovgaard, respectively?<\/p>\n<p>By considering the supposedly \u2018National\u2019 artists through the lens of public art criticism, it will be easier to see how the discussion on the national in art was also closely linked with other discussions pertaining to ideas of the national during this period. Comparing pictures and letters by Marstrand and Skovgaard shows how the art world of the day actively negotiated the general perception of what constituted national art. Moreover, it points to how the negotiations taking place within the framework of the group designated as National should also be seen in the light of the era\u2019s more general tendencies in terms of politics and the history of mentalities. Historian Claus M\u00f8ller J\u00f8rgensen has demonstrated how the period\u2019s ideas about <em>Bildung<\/em> involved a similar clash between the concepts of civilisation and nation: the classical education\/<em>Bildung<\/em> rooted in antiquity and European cultural history was challenged by a new ideal which instead tended to draw on ideas associated with the nation, the people and a more local past.<sup id=\"footnote-5\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"5\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nClaus M\u00f8ller J\u00f8rgensen: &amp;lsquo;Civilisation og nation i dansk dannelsest\u00e6nkning i det 19. \u00e5rhundrede&amp;rsquo; in Peter Fibiger Bang: <em>Fremmed og moderne. <\/em><em>Glimt af antikken i Europa<\/em>, Aarhus Universitetsforlag, 2005, 100&amp;ndash;115\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">5<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0This new, national ideal of <em>Bildung<\/em> is interventional and insistent because it is not satisfied with being confined to the history of ideas: it actively requires political action and development.<\/p>\n<p>The Dutch cultural historian and theorist on nationalism Joep Leerssen\u2019s theories on nineteenth-century transnational cultural centres and the period\u2019s cultivation of national culture will serve as a recurring lens in the following efforts to discern the nuances of divergent perceptions of \u2018the national\u2019.<sup id=\"footnote-6\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"6\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nJoep Leerssen: &amp;lsquo;Nationalism and the cultivation of culture&amp;rsquo; in <em>Nations and Nationalism<\/em>, 2 (4), 2006a, 559&amp;ndash;578 and Joep Leerssen: <em>National thought in Europe: a cultural history<\/em>, Amsterdam University Press, 2006b\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">6<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2><em>Dagbladet\u2019<\/em>s groupings in 1854<\/h2>\n<p>In 1854, the Copenhagen-based newspaper <em>Dagbladet <\/em>ran an article about \u2018factions\u2019, \u2018cliques\u2019 and \u2018camps\u2019 in the Danish artist community \u2013 unattractive concepts in an age when individuality remained an ideal.<sup id=\"footnote-7\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"7\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\n&amp;lsquo;I forrige uge&amp;rsquo; in <em>Dagbladet<\/em> 03.04.1854. This discussion has regularly, if sporadically found its way into Danish art history research; in recent years the topic has received more in-depth treatment, especially by Gertrud Oelsner and Karina Lykke Grand, cf.: Oelsner 2016 pp. 295-298; Oelsner and Lykke Grand 2014<em>;<\/em> Lykke Grand and Oelsner 2018. However, there is still a need for an additional charting and account of Danish art criticism of the 1840s and 1850s in order to properly understand the full extent of the public discussion on the period&amp;rsquo;s art and cultural policies.\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">7<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0At this point in time, it was quite common for art-related news to make headlines and for reviews to take up column space on a par with political news. The annual public exhibition at Charlottenborg, where the artists associated with the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts exhibited their work, was treated to particularly thorough attention in the newspaper\u2019s art criticism. The discussion concerning cliques and rifts on the Danish art scene was sustained in the following years and spread to other newspapers published in the capital, including <em>Flyveposten<\/em> and <em>F\u00e6drelandet<\/em>. The political standpoint of <em>Flyveposten<\/em> was predominantly conservative, while <em>F\u00e6drelandet<\/em> was part of the National Liberal movement. The art debate was of considerable scope and highly influential, meaning that it should be incorporated into our overall understanding of the developments in art and cultural policies in nineteenth-century Denmark. Accordingly, I will offer a comprehensive account of this debate as the framework for the research conducted here.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 884px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.perspectivejournal.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/fig._1.jpg\" width=\"884\" height=\"1080\" data-layout=\"width-50\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Fig. 1.<\/strong> Wilhelm Marstrand: <em>Double Portrait of the Merchant Christopher Fredenreich Hage and his wife, Christiane Annete, n\u00e9e Just<\/em>, 1849-52. Photo: Public domain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to <em>Dagbladet<\/em>\u2019s article from 3 April 1854, the Danish art world was home to two leading groupings: the \u2018Brunettes\u2019 (or \u2018Brown Ones\u2019), who employed a dark palette and mainly looked to the European art scene for traditional subjects and who, the following year, were referred to as \u2018Cosmopolitans\u2019 in the same newspaper; and the \u2018Blonds\u2019, who used a lighter palette and wished to set their work apart from the more established art tradition in order to assert a distinctly national vein of art; the following year, <em>Dagbladet <\/em>described them as \u2018National\u2019<em>.<\/em> <em>Dagbladet<\/em> also points out how the division between the two artists\u2019 groups found expression through their allies: the Blonds are linked to Selskabet for Nordisk Kunst (the Society for Nordic Art) and <em>F\u00e6drelandet<\/em>, while the Brunettes are associated with Kunstforeningen (the Copenhagen Art Society) and <em>Flyveposten <\/em>\u2013 institutions and media who were known as representatives of conflicting (cultural) political positions in their own time, too. Indeed, <em>F\u00e6drelandet<\/em> was allowed to play a prominent role as a prop in Marstrand\u2019s <em>Double Portrait of the Merchant Christopher Fredenreich Hage and his wife, Christiane Annete, n\u00e9e Just<\/em> (1849\u201352) [<strong>fig. 1<\/strong>], where the newspaper can be seen prominently flung over a handrail in the merchant\u2019s study. Its presence can be interpreted as a general nod to the National Liberal circle of which the Hage family was a significant part, but it may also be a more direct reference to the couple\u2019s deceased son Johannes Hage, who was briefly editor of <em>F\u00e6drelandet<\/em> but reportedly committed suicide after having been subjected to censorship in 1837.<sup id=\"footnote-8\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"8\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nHans Jensen: &amp;lsquo;Johannes Hage &amp;ndash; Journalist&amp;rsquo; in <em>Dansk Biografisk Leksikon<\/em>, 2014-16 via <a href=&quot;https:\/\/biografiskleksikon.lex.dk\/Johannes_Hage_-_journalist&quot;>https:\/\/biografiskleksikon.lex.dk\/Johannes_Hage_-_journalist<\/a> (25.05.2020)\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">8<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In the 1840s, the couple\u2019s sons Hother and Alfred Hage were both part of the editorial staff at the newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>In the article of April 1854, <em>Dagbladet <\/em>emphasises that the artists specified might not consider themselves part of a specific group, a particular \u2018<em>us\u2019<\/em>, but also asserts that the self-same artists are allegedly fond of setting themselves apart by designating other groups as \u2018<em>them\u2019<\/em>. <em>Dagbladet<\/em> claimed to simply be an observer pointing out how the two cliques were championed and defended by <em>F\u00e6drelandet <\/em>and <em>Flyveposten<\/em> respectively. However, the two newspapers thus accused maintained that their art critique was based on purely professional grounds, not political motivations. In actual practice, however, the (culture)political views of the two dailies are quite apparent in their regular art criticism, lending weight to <em>Dagbladet<\/em>\u2019s claim.<sup id=\"footnote-9\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"9\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nThe serialised reviews in <em>Flyveposten<\/em>, published in ten instalments from 8 April to 10 May 1847, is an obvious example: almost all of the artists who are later branded as &amp;lsquo;Brunette&amp;rsquo; are singled out for praise, while those who would later be called &amp;lsquo;National&amp;rsquo; are passed over in silence. The only exception is a passing mention of how Roed exhibited a bad portrait and Skovgaard is duly ignored as &amp;lsquo;insignificant&amp;rsquo;.&amp;nbsp;\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">9<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0<em>Flyveposten<\/em> had actively participated in the art debate prior to 1854. However, in 1854 they ran only a brief, patronising comment on the debate as a follow-up to a review of that year\u2019s Charlottenborg salon in which the newspaper mainly praised the Cosmopolitan artists as per usual. However, the 1855 Charlottenborg exhibition saw <em>Flyveposten<\/em> print an unusual review presented as a conversation between an \u2018art critic\u2019 and an \u2018art lover\u2019. While this conversation was not overtly linked to the newspaper debate, it quite specifically addresses the conflicting positions.<sup id=\"footnote-10\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"10\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\n&amp;lsquo;I forrige uge&amp;rsquo; in <em>Dagbladet<\/em> 15.051854; &amp;lsquo;Kunstudstillingen 1854&amp;rsquo; I-V in <em>Flyveposten:<\/em> 19.04.1854, 26.04.1854, 01.05.1854, 13.05.1854, 17.05.1854; &amp;lsquo;Udstillings-Conversation&amp;rsquo; in <em>Flyveposten<\/em> 03.05.1855, 07.05.1855, 11. 05.1855.&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">10<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Whereas the Cosmopolitan camp based its endeavours on the traditional European art scene, making it more explicitly transnational, <em>Dagbladet<\/em> points to the art historian N.L. H\u00f8yen as the ideological vanguard of the Nationals and the dawning aversion to all aspects of art that appeared to have their origins in Germany. H\u00f8yen was an omnipresent and very influential art historian who was co-founder of Kunstforeningen (The Copenhagen Art Society, 1825), served as professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (from 1829), as curator at the Det Kongelige Billedgalleri (The Royal Picture Gallery, from 1839), was a co-founder of Selskabet for Nordisk Kunst (The Society for Nordic Art, 1847), and a professor and co-founder of the arts department at the University of Copenhagen (from 1856). In addition, he gave semi-public lectures on art in the homes of politicians, intellectuals and businessmen, and was invited on at least two occasions to enter politics via the parliamentary system (1848 and 1853).<sup id=\"footnote-11\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"11\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nH\u00f8yen&amp;rsquo;s name is listed on election ballots in 1848 and 1853: first on the list of &amp;lsquo;<em>saadanne, som man \u00f8nsker maatte blive opfordrede og ville modtage Valg&amp;rsquo; <\/em>[Those one might wish to be called upon to accept election], cf. <em>F\u00e6drelandet<\/em> 16 September 1848, and in 1853 his name was put forward as elector, cf. <em>F\u00e6drelandet<\/em> 11 May 1853. At this time, electors would elect members of the Landsting on behalf of a wider circle of citizens.\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">11<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0H\u00f8yen exerted significant influence and succeeded in steering several artists of the time in a more national and Scandinavian direction, not only in a political and academic sense, but also in purely practical terms, prompting them to use Denmark and Scandinavia as destinations for their professional Grand Tours instead of regarding Rome as their obvious and primary geographical and academic destination for study.<sup id=\"footnote-12\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"12\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nN.L. H\u00f8yen: &amp;lsquo;Om Betingelserne for en Skandinavisk Nationalkonst&amp;rsquo;s Udvikling&amp;rsquo; in J.L. Ussing: <em>Niels Lauritz H\u00f8yens Skrifter, <\/em>vol. 1, Gyldendal, 1871, 351&amp;ndash;369\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">12<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0His position of power also made him controversial and a target of criticism and attack. In May 1847, July 1849 and April 1850, <em>Flyveposten<\/em> ran very explicit attacks against H\u00f8yen, protesting that he favoured the National clique at the expense of other artists.<sup id=\"footnote-13\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"13\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\n&amp;lsquo;Om Professor H\u00f8yen og Kunsten&amp;rsquo; in <em>Flyveposten<\/em> 29.05.1847, 31.05.1847 and 02.06.1847; &amp;lsquo;Et par bem\u00e6rkninger ved prof. See also <em>Flyveposten<\/em> 19.04.1850 and 29.04.1850\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">13<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Using a term employed by Joep Leerssen, H\u00f8yen can be defined as a <em>multitasker<\/em> because his ambitions for art were both cultural and political in scope and because he was a weighty authority who had the attentive ear of politicians, the business community, artists and citizens in general.<sup id=\"footnote-14\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"14\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nJoep Leerssen defines multitaskers as actors actively engaged in different fields in Leerssen 2006a, 567\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">14<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Hence, H\u00f8yen is an important piece of the puzzle for anyone seeking to understand the divergent conceptions of the idea of \u2018national art\u2019 seen at the time. H\u00f8yen wanted the artists to create a distinctively national art, and as part of this active striving to develop a specific ideology he urged artists to travel around Denmark in order to portray the peasants and the landscape and to visualise Norse mythology.<sup id=\"footnote-15\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"15\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nThe point is most clearly articulated in H\u00f8yen&amp;rsquo;s own lecture: N.L. H\u00f8yen 1871. For more on H\u00f8yen, see: Karina Lykke Grand and Gertrud Oelsner: &amp;lsquo;Selskabet for Nordisk Kunst. H\u00f8yen og Det Kongelige Billedgallerie i nationalkunstens tjeneste&amp;rsquo; in <em>SMK art journal<\/em>, 2005\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">15<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>H\u00f8yen acquired a number of contemporary works for the Royal Picture Gallery (now the National Gallery of Denmark). We can also glean from the catalogues detailing the annual juried exhibitions at Charlottenborg that the buyers and commissioners of works by the seven \u2018National\u2019 artists included many National-Liberal politicians and business people. In those cases where the ownership of a given painting is stated in the exhibition catalogues, a very explicit link is established between sender and user, clearly signalling the buyer\u2019s cultural and financial capital. Such information awakens interest in present-day observers, and may also have done so back then. Links of this nature may be read as an expression of the individual artist\u2019s political affiliations or as a political message sent by the buyer, who may have had a vested interest in having their particular political convictions visually presented in their home or in their official reception rooms. Writing on this topic, sociologist Athena S. Leoussi states that: \u2018national art is the work of cultural elites whose aim is to organise, unify, streamline and standardise, and, in this way, \u201cmodernise\u201d pre-existing ethnic identities and solidarities\u2019.<sup id=\"footnote-16\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"16\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nAthena S. Leoussi: &amp;lsquo;The ethno-cultural roots of national art&amp;rsquo; in <em>Nations and Nationalism, <\/em>10 (1\/2), 2004, 143&amp;ndash;159, p. 144\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">16<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Thus, art was also purchased in order to visually and materially manifest a bourgeois political ambition; buyers could actively use art as a means of communication.<\/p>\n<p>These artists travelled extensively and for long periods of a time, which means that we have access to quite a lot of surviving letters relating news of various kinds, big and small, from Denmark and abroad. The letters sent by Marstrand to his friend and fellow artist Skovgaard in Rome over the course of 1854 and 1855 make no mention of the articles in <em>Dagbladet<\/em> \u2013 but Marstrand does articulate his belief that artists should work closely together, forming a community where they can support, develop and challenge each other. In March of 1855, he very briefly states that Skovgaard must prepare for what he calls a \u2018war\u2019 in the art world (but, unfortunately for this analysis, he has no wish to further bore Skovgaard with that particular issue in his letter): \u2018That we look forward to seeing you and Georgia soon goes without saying \u2013 but I would ask you to gird yourself, to be prepared to carry your shield and lance forth into the realm of artists, for there is war going on there as there is in so many other aspects of life, and it is difficult to tell what the outcome will be\u2019.<sup id=\"footnote-17\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"17\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nWilhelm Marstrand in a letter to P.C. Skovgaard 23.03.1855. Marstrand also writes to P.C. Skovgaard on 29.06.1854, 07.08.1854, 08.08.1854 and 05.12.1854 (The Skovgaard Museum)\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">17<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0It is quite likely that this \u2018war\u2019 is, among other things, a reference to the conflicts with the politically (mostly) conservative art academy and the squabbles with Kunstforeningen (Copenhagen Art Society), which was also quite conservative and opposed to those aspirations for collecting art and making it widely accessible that H\u00f8yen and the other Liberal artists advocated. Marstrand was himself a professor as well as director of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts when he wrote the letter, so he was presumably embroiled in the \u2018war\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The discussion of art in newspapers, private letters and semi-public lectures took place in the same spaces and same columns used for the discussion of more strictly political issues \u2013 a link that is also an essential part of the cultivation of culture described by Joep Leerssen.<sup id=\"footnote-18\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"18\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nLeerssen 2006a pp. 559&amp;ndash;578 and Leerssen 2006b\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">18<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The art criticism run by the various newspapers was not neutral; their descriptions of selected works and the choice of which artists to review or ignore very clearly represented opposing outlooks. The debate on art highlights the general interest in the artists, an interest that went beyond the scope of their works \u2013 exploring not just <em>how <\/em>they paint and the quality of that work, but also <em>why.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In what follows, <em>Dagbladet<\/em>\u2019s articles and lists of named artists from 1854 and 1855 serve as the backdrop for specifically comparing and contrasting P.C. Skovgaard and Wilhelm Marstrand \u2013 because Danish art history\u2019s focus on <em>Dagbladet<\/em>\u2019s dichotomy between two overall groupings has come to overshadow the internal differences and tensions within the two designated groups, even though these tensions have been instrumental in driving specific art historical and cultural developments.<\/p>\n<h2>Cultivating culture in times of political turmoil<\/h2>\n<p>At the time when the colour schemes and political connotations of Skovgaard, Marstrand and their Danish colleagues were discussed in the Copenhagen-based newspapers in 1854\u201355, the Danish political system continued its struggle to establish a constitution. In the wake of the turbulent years of European revolutions around 1848, Denmark became a constitutional monarchy and got its first constitution in 1849. The duchies of Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenborg and their status as members of the Danish Unitary State (Personal Union \/\u2018Helstat\u2019) was a recurring controversial issue, and the problem of whether the duchies could be incorporated into a Danish constitution resulted in The First Schleswig War (1848\u201351). The war failed to yield a solution that was politically acceptable internationally, so politicians and other rulers still discussed and contested the boundary between Denmark and Germany in 1854\u201355. In the shadow of unresolved tensions associated with the duchies and uncertainties regarding the succession to the Danish throne, the Danish constitution was firmly established with the parallel constitution for the Unitary State (F\u00e6llesforfatningen) in 1855. The year before, the government headed by A.S. \u00d8rsted (1778\u20131860) had sought, in vain, to reintroduce conditions akin to absolute monarchy, a move regarded as utterly unacceptable by Marstrand\u2019s and Skovgaard\u2019s National Liberal circles.<sup id=\"footnote-19\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"19\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nSee e.g. letters from Constantin Hansen to P.C. Skovgaard dated 25.07.1854, 21.08.1854, 24.09.1854 and 27.11.1854, in which A.S. \u00d8rsted&amp;rsquo;s constitution policies are roundly rejected (The Skovgaard Museum)\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">19<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Finding hard, unequivocal evidence of how visual art had a direct impact on such seminal political developments can be quite a challenge \u2013 even though it is quite likely that cultural developments were crucial in establishing and visualising imagined communities and, hence, in the mobilisation of political unity. It is easier to see how political developments impacted the visual arts and the art scene. Landscape art saw a particular boom during these years, a trait which art historian Janne Gallen-Kallela-Sir\u00e9n describes as a direct consequence of the geopolitical discussions and shifts.<sup id=\"footnote-20\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"20\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nJanne Gallen-Kallela-Sir\u00e9n: &amp;lsquo;Naturen som territorium. Den nordiske nationalismes indtog i landskabsmaleriet&amp;rsquo; in Peter N\u00f8rgaard Larsen and Sven Bjerkhof (eds): <em>Verden som landskab. <\/em><em>Nordisk landskabsmaleri 1840-1910<\/em>, The National Gallery of Denmark, Copehagen, 2006, 211&amp;ndash;229\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">20<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Now, art was called upon to visualise the new territories, and the quantities of landscape paintings presented at exhibitions rose noticeably in the 1840s. It is also a well-known fact that artists influenced each other and the general artistic trends across the various borders of Europe.<sup id=\"footnote-21\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"21\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nDavid Jackson: &amp;ldquo;Nordic Romantic Landscape: A Double Helix&amp;rdquo;, i David Jackson; Werner Busch og Jenny Reynaerts (red.): <em>Romanticism in the North. From Friedrich to Turner<\/em>, Groninger Museum, W books, 2018, 23-41, s. 23&amp;nbsp;\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">21<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Hence, the artists\u2019 perception of what national art should be like and\/or able to achieve should also be seen in light of wider societal developments of which they were part. The discussion of art is not just about art, but also concerns wider aspects of culture, politics and the development of national identities; the efforts to build a national identity will be familiar in many countries. Accordingly, visual art also has a clear place in Joep Leeersen\u2019s concept of culture, posited among what he calls <em>material culture<\/em>.<sup id=\"footnote-22\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"22\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nLeerssen 2006a p. 569. Orvar L\u00f6fgren has put forward a similar argument, only taking his point of departure in a more popular, everyday concept of culture in Orva L\u00f6fgren: &amp;lsquo;The nationalization of culture&amp;rsquo; in <em>Ethnologia Europaea<\/em> vol 19, no. 1, 1989, 5-24\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">22<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>When <em>Dagbladet<\/em> highlights national art as a particular and exalted position vis-\u00e0-vis other types of art, the newspaper takes part in a process that selects and processes cultural modes of expression and presents them as part of a nationalist-oriented discussion of (cultural) politics.<sup id=\"footnote-23\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"23\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nLeerssen 2006a 568-571\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">23<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Leerssen defines such cultivation as being based on the actor\u2019s conscious intention to instrumentalise culture.<\/p>\n<p>By extension of this definition, H\u00f8yen and Skovgaard can be regarded as examples of stakeholders who actively disciplined culture on the basis of a nationality-based political strategy. Marstrand, however, did not want to instrumentalise art for anything other than art\u2019s own sake, meaning that he does not take on such a cultivating role. Even so, because the historiography of art history has largely been shaped on the basis of <em>Dagbladet<\/em>\u2019s list, Marstrand\u2019s art has, over time, been taken to represent the same national-political point of view.<\/p>\n<h2>Transnational influences on national developments<\/h2>\n<p>Leerssen has argued that the (cultural) nationalism of the period should be considered in the light of transnational movements. Cultural centres and catalysts may reside outside of the national state to which a given artist, politician or scholar belonged.<sup id=\"footnote-24\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"24\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nLeerssen 2006a 559-65\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">24<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In order to understand how the artists shaped their ideas about what constituted \u2018national\u2019 art, it is important to study their transnational patterns and movements. In the early nineteenth century, the Grand Tour through Europe to Rome, a journey intended to complete the artists\u2019 education and make them more fully rounded, civilised human beings, was a well-established tradition. However, many traditions were changing these years, including among artists. Their Grand Tours gradually grew briefer, more efficient transport options emerged, the destinations changed, and some artists chose to pursue entirely new paths.<\/p>\n<p>As far as Marstrand and Skovgaard are concerned, it is clear that the two artists had different priorities in terms of travelling abroad: Marstrand travelled several times and spent many years in Italy, while Skovgaard initially stayed in Denmark and only later set out for brief stays abroad, including in Rome. The Danish artists in Rome did not get involved or integrated with their Italian counterparts, preferring instead to spend their time in the company of Danish, Nordic and German colleagues.<sup id=\"footnote-25\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"25\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nHans Edvard N\u00f8rregaard-Nielsen: &amp;lsquo;Om de danske kunstnere i Rom&amp;rsquo; in Tue Ritzau and Karen Ascani (eds.): <em>Rom er et fortryllet bur. Den gyldne epoke for skandinaviske kunstnere i Rom<\/em>, Forlaget Rhodos, 1982, 69-121 pp. 101-105\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">25<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0They all socialised freely, and the groupings would not have been nearly as sharply defined as those described by <em>Dagbladet<\/em> within the confines of Denmark. In Rome, the artists influenced each other and let themselves be influenced by the art and working community they had travelled there to find. In this way, Rome served as a transnational cultural centre defined by professional rather than geopolitical boundaries, one where the artists came together in a feeling of fellowship centred on the arts. Marstrand fits neatly into this almost mythological tale of artists setting out for the magnificent art of Rome, while Skovgaard chose H\u00f8yen\u2019s new Nordic path instead.<\/p>\n<p>During this period, no new cultural centre ever materialised within Scandinavia, but a wish to have such a centre emerge is clearly evident in H\u00f8yen\u2019s famous lectures <em>Om Betingelserne for en Skandinavisk Nationalkonst<\/em><em>\u2019s Udvikling <\/em>(Concerning the Conditions for the Development of a Scandinavian National Art), given at Skandinavisk Selskab (The Scandinavian Society) in 1844.<sup id=\"footnote-26\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"26\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nN.L. H\u00f8yen 1871\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">26<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0A link between politics and art, as expressed within the context of the Scandinavism movement, is also discernible in the growing rejection of German art as the political conflicts concerning the contested duchies intensified between Denmark and Germany in the 1840s. A marked change from the first decades of the century, when the cultural ties between Denmark and Germany were strong \u2013 the art scenes of Munich, Dresden and D\u00fcsseldorf in particular are regarded as having been important to the evolution of Danish art.<sup id=\"footnote-27\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"27\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nKasper Monrad: <em>Dansk Guldalder. Lyset, landskabet og hverdagslivet<\/em>, Gyldendal 2013, pp. 129&amp;ndash;135 and Kasper Monrad: &amp;lsquo;Udsigt gennem tre buer. Dansk-tyske kunstnerm\u00f8der i Danmark, Tyskland og Italien&amp;rsquo; in <em>Under samme himmel. Land og by i dansk og tysk kunst 1800-1850<\/em>, Thorvaldsens Museum, 2000, 12&amp;ndash;26 pp. 22&amp;ndash;23\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">27<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Scandinavism accommodated H\u00f8yen\u2019s ambitions to strengthen national and Nordic art from the inside, as well as the ideas held by the Scandinavian student movements which met at major Nordic rallies in the 1840s \u2013 with the leading National Liberal politician, Orla Lehmann (1810\u20131870) among the participants.<sup id=\"footnote-28\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"28\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nFor more on the Scandinavism movement, see Ruth Hemstad, Jes Fabricius M\u00f8ller and Dag Thorkildsen (eds): <em>Skandinavismen. This is to say that like Marstrand, Skovgaard was also part of a trans-boundary movement, but the Scandinavism movement was by no means restricted to artists \u2013 it was also an explicitly political community.<sup id=\"footnote-29\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"29\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nRasmus Glenth\u00f8j: &amp;lsquo;Skandinavismen som en politisk n\u00f8dvendighed. Politisk skandinavisme i et teoretisk og komparativt perspektiv&amp;rsquo; in Hemstad, Fabricius M\u00f8ller Thorkildsen 2018, 227&amp;ndash;257\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">29<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2>Wilhelm Marstrand\u2019s apolitical \u00a0art agenda<\/h2>\n<p>Wilhelm Marstrand travelled through Europe for the first time in 1836, passing through Germany on his way to Italy, where he remained for five years. When travelling back home from Rome in 1840, Marstrand wrote the following passage in a letter to his brother:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You know that nothing big happens in the world without opposition and discord, without elements that clash and fray \u2013 either fight or sleep \u2013 if one has the power to win the fight, then something good always arises, even if the fighters themselves often perish in the process. In our part of the world, the Academy\u2019s endeavours have put art into the deepest sleep possible, and I assure you that this is the reason why the artists are so loath to return home, preferring instead to eke out a miserable existence as they do out here; but in this they are wrong; I am forever preaching to them that they ought all to return home, for by standing all together we might accomplish something; just by standing tall together we would collectively form an authority against the existing state of affairs, without false modesty or bitterness, simply by retaining our independence.<sup id=\"footnote-30\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"30\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nWilhelm Marstrand in a letter to Osvald Julius Marstrand 16.10.1840 (Danmarks Breve).\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">30<\/a><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Marstrand is, then, convinced that it is time for a change in the Danish art world \u2013 and that effecting such change requires a joint effort against the status quo. However, the Marstrand biographer Karl Madsen points out that the developments which Marstrand hoped to awaken in Danish art were not the same that H\u00f8yen and the slightly younger group of artists, including Skovgaard, began to discuss during those same years. Marstrand wanted to improve the quality and professionalism of Danish art, while H\u00f8yen and his circle aimed to create a distinctively Danish mode of art that differed from the established one.<sup id=\"footnote-31\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"31\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nMadsen 1905, 85-86\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">31<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Grasping this nuance is essential for understanding the paradox represented by Marstrand because it indicates that Marstrand\u2019s national interest in the arts was primarily rooted in professional, skill-related concerns rather than political ones. This view is borne out by a frequently quoted letter to his friend and colleague Constantin Hansen (1804\u201380) sent from Rome in 1847 in which Marstrand clearly distances himself from H\u00f8yen\u2019s ambition to create a distinctly national art associated with geopolitics:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What do all these ideas of politics, nationality and grain duties have to do with painterly impact and the beauty of lines? What does it mean that art should be national? Does this mean that it should be politically Danish, extending from the Konge\u00e5 to the North Sea, depicting only those subjects found therein? [\u2026] No, just as the self-same sun shines above the entire world, so is art without all bounds; it serves only Truth and Beauty. [\u2026] I shall not let myself be confused by these passing tales of Scandinavism, constitutions and such matters, for they have not one whit to do with the eternal laws of beauty, harmony and mankind\u2019s urge to live in the realm of the dimly perceived. They may well be greatly important to us too as citizens, but not as artists.<sup id=\"footnote-32\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"32\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nWilhelm Marstrand in a letter to Constantin Hansen from 26.06.1847 (Danmarks breve).\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">32<\/a><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here Marstrand very clearly states his belief that art and politics are separate entities that should not affect each other, but that of course the artist has a separate interest in both fields.<sup id=\"footnote-33\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"33\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nThis is particularly interesting in the letter to Constantin Hansen quoted here given that Hansen very much allowed the spheres to mix.\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">33<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The letter clearly refers to the manifesto issued in H\u00f8yen\u2019s 1844 lecture. A few years later, in 1850, <em>Flyveposten<\/em> ran an attack against H\u00f8yen and his circle which closely echoes Marstrand\u2019s words: \u2018Nothing has less to do with nationality than art. The most glorious, widely sprawling realm is art\u2019s only true native country\u2019.<sup id=\"footnote-34\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"34\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nNos. 7 and 8: &amp;lsquo;Selskabet for nordisk Kunst og Selskabet for den gjensidige Beundring&amp;rsquo; in <em>Flyveposten<\/em> 09.04.1850\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">34<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In his letters to Skovgaard from 1854\u201355, Marstrand keeps his friend and colleague updated on the political situation in Denmark, but it is clear that his knowledge of constitutional affairs is perfunctory, remaining mostly at headline level, and he freely admits that he does not know much beyond what he reports in the letters.<sup id=\"footnote-35\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"35\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nMarstrand in a letter to Skovgaard 07.08.1854 (The Skovgaard Museum)\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">35<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0A striking contrast to the comprehensive political analyses found in the painter Constantin Hansen\u2019s letters to Skovgaard during those same years. Even though a number of years have passed since Marstrand wrote his 1847 letter to Constantin Hansen, his interest focuses most keenly on matters that pertain more closely to his own professional field, art, and this includes H\u00f8yen\u2019s conception of Danish and international art. Marstrand had little time for H\u00f8yen\u2019s ideas about all the ills associated with German art. In a letter to Skovgaard from 1855 he comments that hopefully, the fact that severe winter weather had forced H\u00f8yen to stay in Berlin for the winter would improve his view of the German artists.<sup id=\"footnote-36\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"36\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nW. Marstrand in a letter to P.C. Skovgaard 20.03.1855 (The Skovgaard Museum)\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">36<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0H\u00f8yen\u2019s nationalist animosity towards German art was also pointed out in <em>Dagbladet<\/em>\u2019s article \u2013 and given that his sentiments were presumably based on both artistic and political differences, they were unlikely to be changed much by an involuntary winter encounter with German art. Yet despite their differences, H\u00f8yen and Marstrand were good colleagues, and Marstrand took part in the salons hosted in H\u00f8yen\u2019s home, an important venue for discussing and developing art politics.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1100px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter oversized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.perspectivejournal.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/fig._2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"1459\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Fig. 2.<\/strong> Wilhelm Marstrand: <em>The Art Historian Niels Lauritz H\u00f8yen<\/em>, 1868. Photo: Public domain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>The portrait of H\u00f8yen<\/h2>\n<p>On the occasion of H\u00f8yen&#8217;s birthday, Marstrand painted his portrait in 1868 [<strong>fig. 2<\/strong>]. In a gesture of respect, Marstrand has depicted the art historian speaking about pictures by Raphael, shown behind him, and standing in front of open books that clearly signal H\u00f8yen\u2019s academic qualifications. Strikingly, the portrait does not contain a single reference to Norse mythology or to national politics, aspects which were such a prominent part of H\u00f8yen\u2019s endeavours. Marstrand has opted to completely remove H\u00f8yen from that context, perhaps because he believed that H\u00f8yen\u2019s legacy was better served by an emphasis on his classic art historical achievements rather than on \u2018passing tales of Scandinavism\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Having been a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts since 1848, Marstrand was appointed director of that institution from 1853 to 1857 and again from 1863 to 1873. Thus, he too held a prominent position of power from which to speak, and his close ties to the still predominantly conservative art academy should be particularly noted here. In the 1840s and 1850s, the nationally oriented artists struggled to gain seats in the Academy, causing some strife between the two wings. Not until Marstrand\u2019s second term in office, which saw an adjustment to the membership rules so that prospective members no longer needed to be put forward by an existing member, did the previous preponderance of conservative forces on the academy shift and budge, making room for the (National) Liberal artists.<sup id=\"footnote-37\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"37\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nPeter N\u00f8rgaard Larsen: &amp;lsquo;Med Ryggen mod Fremtiden. Billedkunst i anden halvdel af 1800-tallet&amp;rsquo;, in <em>Kunstakademiet 1754-2004<\/em>, vol. 1, Det Kongelige Akademi for De Sk\u00f8nne Kunster and Arkitektens Forlag, 2004, 119&amp;shy;&amp;ndash;185, pp. 121&amp;ndash;122&amp;nbsp;\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">37<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>By occupying a position on the outskirts of the progressive national agenda, and by explicitly keeping a certain distance from overtly political, agitational art, Marstrand got access to changing the systems from within. Yet in spite of Marstrand\u2019s chance to wield organisational influence, H\u00f8yen was still the one who made the most noticeable imprint, certainly on art history as recorded by posterity \u2013 probably because he actively connected art and ideology by means of his powerful network, for example by arranging commissions and by managing the collecting activities of permanent collections.<sup id=\"footnote-38\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"38\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nOne of the discussions prevalent within the profession at the time concerned the question of collecting practices and accessibility. H\u00f8yen and Orla Lehmann wanted to set up permanent collections that were open to the public. By contrast, the Kunstforeningen (Copenhagen Art Society) circle wished to give people access to art by allowing private individuals to win the works, thereby disseminating the works. Den Historie og Virksomhed fra dens stiftelse til 1863<\/em> and Orla Lehmann &amp;lsquo;Til Konstforeningen&amp;rsquo; (part 1 of 3) in <em>F\u00e6drelandet<\/em> 28.03.1846.\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">38<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Art historian Gitte Valentiner has pointed out a paradox: that Marstrand appears to have been National <em>and<\/em> Cosmopolitan at the same time. In his relationships \u2013 such as in his position as regular portraitist to the National-Liberal Hage family \u2013 and presumably also in his personal political beliefs, Marstrand was in line with the other National artists, but he preferred not to incorporate this point of view in his artistic work.<sup id=\"footnote-39\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"39\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nGitte Valentiner: <em>Wilhelm Marstrand. Scenebilleder,<\/em> Gyldendal, 1992, 59&amp;ndash;69\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">39<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0As has been demonstrated in the above, Marstrand\u2019s letters clearly state that he wished to refrain from mixing art and politics, including what might be more narrowly considered \u2018cultural politics\u2019. Photo: Public domain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>A national theme?<\/h2>\n<p>In 1853, <em>Flyveposten<\/em> levelled specific criticism at Marstrand, claiming that the Scandinavist subject matter of his painting <em>Church<\/em><em>-Goers Arriving by Boat at the Parish Church of Leksand on Siljan Lake, Sweden <\/em>(1853) [<strong>fig.<\/strong> <strong>3<\/strong>] pandered to H\u00f8yen\u2019s national programme.<sup id=\"footnote-40\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"40\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nWilhelm Marstrand: <em>Church-Goers Arriving by Boat at the Parish Church of Leksand on Siljan Lake, Sweden<\/em>, 1853, oil on canvas, 130.5 x 215 cm, The National Gallery of Denmark. &amp;lsquo;Om Kunstudstillingen I&amp;rsquo; in <em>Flyveposten<\/em> 26.04.1853\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">40<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Belonging to the Cosmopolitan camp itself, the newspaper might be right in claiming that Marstrand\u2019s painting partly constituted an attempt to accommodate National tastes \u2013 after all, H\u00f8yen commissioned it for the Royal Picture Gallery.<sup id=\"footnote-41\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"41\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nValentiner 1992\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">41<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Marstrand did a large number of sketches for the painting, indicating great commitment. Despite this, it is worth considering whether the subject matter reflects Marstrand\u2019s own ideas, or whether the work was, as claimed by <em>Flyveposten<\/em>, an overture to H\u00f8yen\u2019s Scandinavian\/ national agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Marstrand\u2019s subject is almost a one-to-one visualisation of Hans Christian Andersen\u2019s (1805\u20131875) 1851 description of churchgoers going to Leksand.<sup id=\"footnote-42\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"42\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\n<em>Flyveposten<\/em> gave Andersen&amp;rsquo;s book a reasonably positive review, but the critic would have liked to have seen more information on Swedish society besides the poetry, see &amp;lsquo;Litteratur&amp;rsquo;&amp;nbsp;in <em>Flyveposten<\/em> 23.05.1851&amp;nbsp;\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">42<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Right from the point of view adopted and all the way down to the breast-feeding infants, the silk-covered hymn books and the quantity of boats on the shore, the painting matches Andersen\u2019s description.<sup id=\"footnote-43\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"43\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nHans Christian Andersen: &amp;lsquo;XVIII. Midsommerfesten i Leksand&amp;rsquo; in Hans Christian Andersen <em>I Sverrig<\/em>, Det Danske Sprog og Litteraturselskab and&amp;nbsp; Borgen, 2003, 86&amp;ndash;87\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">43<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The most striking difference is that Marstrand has not decorated the ships with green branches or put red tassels on the men\u2019s hats as in Andersen\u2019s account. The very direct correspondence to the literary source may be interpreted as a calculated strategic effort to work with subject matter that would meet with H\u00f8yen\u2019s approval. In light of Andersen\u2019s text, however, one may also read Marstrand\u2019s choice of subject as more apolitically illustrative than actively agitating. With this painting, Marstrand may not have been deeply immersed in H\u00f8yen\u2019s agenda, instead seeking, as demonstrated by the H\u00f8yen portrait, to negotiate an intermediate position where the national or Scandinavian aspect is not the goal in itself, but instead a means toward resolving a commission.<\/p>\n<p>All this notwithstanding, it is interesting to note the level of umbrage seemingly taken by <em>Flyveposten<\/em> at the mere fact that the painting complies with H\u00f8yen\u2019s ideas and aspirations: the response tells us something about the unmet expectations the newspaper held of Marstrand. <em>F\u00e6drelandet<\/em>, by contrast, praised the painting while also criticising the more Cosmopolitan artists David Monies (1812\u201394) and Elisabeth Jerichau Baumann (1819\u00ad\u201381).<sup id=\"footnote-44\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"44\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nC.R. in <em>F\u00e6drelandet<\/em> 11.05.1853\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">44<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The newspapers\u2019 struggle regarding national aspects find clear expression in the discussion surrounding <em>Church<\/em><em>-Goers Arriving by Boat<\/em>. The very fact that the Cosmopolitan <em>Flyveposten<\/em> is disappointed must mean that they had expected Marstrand to maintain a more apolitical position instead of engaging in what they perceived to be Scandinavian propaganda. The assessment of the works undertaken at the time is thus also a negotiation of the framework for the National category in which <em>Dagbladet<\/em> placed Marstrand in 1855: it is not the artists themselves who classify the works as National or not; those assignments are made in the art criticism published in the newspapers, and this is also where they conduct their internal struggles for setting the criteria for \u2018the national\u2019. If Marstrand was part of the National group, the criteria for National art (as established by <em>Dagbladet<\/em>) must necessarily also be able to accommodate the highly diverse paintings created by him and the six other artists in the group, providing good opportunities for negotiations between the various newspapers on the exact nature of the \u2018National\u2019 aspects \u2013 and for blaming each other for not living up to their own criteria in their art reviews.<\/p>\n<p>Sociologist Athena S. Leoussi has argued that the history painting continued to play a significant role in the development of the many schools of national art emerging across Europe and that overall, artists developed a greater degree of historical sensitivity in the nineteenth century. Leoussi has demonstrated how a number of subjects spread out concurrently across canvases throughout Europe and across the different art schools, all of which laid claim to national individuality but actually adhered to transnational patterns. These included: the national, the nation\u2019s history, the national portrait, the peasant as representative of the nation-state, and the ethnoscape of landscape<em>.<\/em><sup id=\"footnote-45\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"45\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nLeoussi 2004 p. 145<em>&#8211;<\/em>54\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">45<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Such subjects were also widespread in Danish art during this period; they were precisely the circle of motifs that H\u00f8yen urged artists to cultivate. For Marstrand, his own art was to serve to strengthen Danish art in general, and the specific subject matter was not a crucial factor in this process; rather, the themes chosen were simply a medium for showcasing prowess and craftsmanship. By contrast, the choice of subject matter was a main concern for H\u00f8yen and his camp, because the right subjects could help evoke a sense of community. In a letter to his brother from 1846, Marstrand complained about struggling to sell his works because they did not depict traditional Danish folk scenes.<sup id=\"footnote-46\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"46\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nWilhelm Marstrand in a letter to Osvald Julius Marstrand 06.05.1846 (Danmarks Breve). Marstrand also painted more traditional history paintings, the best known of which is presumably his monumental mural of Christian IV on the ship <em>Trefoldigheden<\/em> in Roskilde Cathedral.\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">46<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1428px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.perspectivejournal.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/fig._4.jpg\" width=\"1428\" height=\"1080\" data-layout=\"width-50\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Fig. 4.<\/strong> Wilhelm Marstrand:<em> From Ludvig Holberg\u2019s \u2018Erasmus Montanus\u2019, Act III, scene 3<\/em>, 1844. Photo: Public domain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The so-called Holberg paintings become something of an escape hatch for Marstrand.<sup id=\"footnote-47\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"47\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nValentiner 1992, 67\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">47<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0For example, his composition <em>From Ludvig Holberg\u2019s \u2018Erasmus Montanus\u2019, Act III, scene 3 <\/em>(1844) contains many of the same elements also found in other genre paintings from the period: plenty of peasants in regional costume and material embodiments of rustic, rural culture [<strong>fig. 4<\/strong>].<sup id=\"footnote-48\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"48\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nTo offer some comparison, in 1849 Frederik Vermehren, whom <em>Dagbladet <\/em>also listed among the National artists, painted <em>Reservesoldatens afsked med sin familie \/ An Army Reserve Soldier Taking His Leave of his Family <\/em>(75.5 x 98.5 cm, oil on canvas, SMK),&amp;nbsp;which depicts a rustic family that is similarly neat and attractive, but depicted in a serious, emotional moment.\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">48<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In contrasts to the effect of authenticity sought in the other genre images, the Holberg scene has a clearly detached and slightly ironic quality due to the fact it depicts a piece of theatre, not reality. Here Marstrand was able to deliver scenes of folk life like H\u00f8yen wanted, but in a detached manner that allowed him to paint forth a narrative rather than an actual, real-life, paltry and unlovely peasant. In his Marstrand biography, Karl Madsen has stated that Marstrand begins to take a more mellow view of H\u00f8yen\u2019s programme during the 1850s.<sup id=\"footnote-49\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"49\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nMadsen 1905 p. 231-33\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">49<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0If this is the case, his change of heart find no further expression in the subjects he chooses to exhibit: Marstrand generally sticks to his existing repertoire of portraits, Holberg scenes and Italian folk scenes in spite of his specific attempts to seek out new subject matter among Nordic landscapes, peasants and Norse mythology.<sup id=\"footnote-50\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"50\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nJf. Reitzel 1883s. 427-433\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">50<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>This is to say that Marstrand\u2019s choice of subject matter may be said to be national in feel, meaning that he represents many of the same trends also found in fellow artists such as P.C. Skovgaard \u2013 with the crucial caveat that Marstrand did not aim to politicise national aspects with his works.<\/p>\n<h2>P.C. Skovgaard as a visual political communicator<\/h2>\n<p>Unlike Marstrand, P.C. Skovgaard was among those artists who were happy to let politics influence their art. This assertion is based partly on the fact that he gave several of H\u00f8yen\u2019s ideas and ambitions visual expression, and partly on his close affiliations members of the \u00a0National Liberal movement.<sup id=\"footnote-51\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"51\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nP.C. Skovgaard was not made the subject of any major biography in the early twentieth century, unlike e.g. Wilhelm Marstrand and Constantin Hansen. Hence, an important contribution to Skovgaard studies was made with the collaboration between the Skovgaard Museum and Fuglsang Kunstmuseum in 2010 and the research-based catalogue that arose out of it: Gertrud Oelsner and Karina Lykke Grand (eds.): <em>P.C. Skovgaard &amp;ndash; Dansk guldalder revurderet<\/em>, Fuglsang Kunstmusem og Aarhus Universitetsforlag, 2010 p. 13.\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">51<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0H\u00f8yen\u2019s presence is quite often palpably felt in Skovgaard\u2019s letters, either as a friend to be sent a greeting, as a travelling companion, or as an imagined critic of whatever Skovgaard was working on at the time.<sup id=\"footnote-52\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"52\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nFor example: P.C. Having said that, it should be added that all of Skovgaard\u2019s surviving letters from the period 1854\u201355, the time when the discussion on art raged most fiercely in the Danish newspapers and when the Danish constitution was being challenged,\u00a0 were sent to family members, <em>not <\/em>to colleagues from the art scene.<sup id=\"footnote-53\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"53\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nThe Skovgaard Museum letter archives house a handful surviving letters written by Skovgaard in 1854-55 and sent to his mother, his grandfather and his wife, Georgia.\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">53<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0His political interests can be seen reflected in the letters Constantin Hansen and Marstrand sent to him while he was staying in Italy. For example, Marstrand comments on how the events back home in Denmark have apparently made Skovgaard uneasy, and later Marstrand even makes apologies for his somewhat brief update on the political situation of their native Denmark: \u2018(\u2026) Even though I know full well you are an avid politician and follow the events here at home, even when in Rome\u2019.<sup id=\"footnote-54\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"54\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nMarstrand in a letter to Skovgaard 05.12.1854 and Marstrand in a letter to Skovgaard 08.08.1854, and Constantin Hansen in letters to P.C. Skovgaard&amp;rsquo; in Oelsner and Lykke Grand 2010, 55&amp;ndash;112\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">56<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Unlike Marstrand and Constantin Hansen, Skovgaard does not express his political views in writing; instead, he renders his (cultural) political views explicit in his visuals.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Landscape painting as history painting<\/h2>\n<p>It would seem natural to regard history painting (and folk scenes) as the genre of choice for a national edifying narrative, and indeed Marstrand and Constantin Hansen did work in this vein. But Skovgaard did not paint history paintings \u2013 certainly not in the traditional sense. Yet his landscapes often incorporate historical elements \u2013 not in the form of kings or mythological figures as in traditional history paintings, but in the form of various antiquities, medieval churches and the unspoiled Danish topography as Skovgaard imagined it, with magnificent beech forests and fading oaks.<sup id=\"footnote-57\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"57\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nOelsner 2010, 68&amp;ndash;74\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">57<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Skovgaard\u2019s and J.Th. Lundbye\u2019s \u00a0(1818\u201348) joint trilogy of pictures created for H.C. Aggersborg (1812\u201395) in 1842 is regarded the most significant launching point of Skovgaard\u2019s political depictions of nature. The paintings contain architectural references to Danish history such as a medieval church, the so-called \u2018Goose Tower\u2019 and Frederiksborg Castle, and the subjects chosen come across as potent sites of memory [<strong>fig. 6<\/strong>].<sup id=\"footnote-58\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"58\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nOelsner 2010,&amp;nbsp;55-64\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">58<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1100px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter oversized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.perspectivejournal.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/2_fig._6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"1037\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Fig. 6.<\/strong> P.C. Photo: Public domain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The mid-nineteenth century saw a shift within the arts: landscape paintings began to dominate at the annual juried Charlottenborg exhibitions, outdoing e.g. history paintings in terms of numbers and popularity alike. In 1854, <em>Dagbladet<\/em> openly stated that they would refrain from reviewing landscape paintings that year in order to maintain a neutral position in the conflict between the Cosmopolitan and National artists.<sup id=\"footnote-59\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"59\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\n&amp;lsquo;I forrige uge&amp;rsquo;, <em>Dagbladet <\/em>15.05.1854\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">59<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Their proclamation points to landscape painting as a prominent locus for negotiations on how the idea of national art should be interpreted and how one might recognise it among the artists. With his landscape paintings, Skovgaard was of course part of this negotiation and part of the movement that made landscape paintings popular. Based on this, I regard Skovgaard\u2019s landscape paintings as a reinvented politicised extension of the history painting genre and as a visual expression of the political commitment absent from his letters.<\/p>\n<p>Art historian Jane Gallen-Kallela-Sir\u00e9n points out that the convergence of years of European revolutions, the growing focus on national identity and the rising popularity of landscape motifs is a logical consequence of the advent of national ideologies and their need to seize and occupy a territory by, among other things, constructing and highlighting it visually.<sup id=\"footnote-60\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"60\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nGallen-Kallela-Sir\u00e9n 2006, pp. 212-213. In the USA, art historian Tricia Cusack has argued that the Hudson River School actively used visualisations of the Hudson River to create a sense of national identity among a new population without any myths and history, cf.: Tricia Cusack: <em>Riverscapes and National Identites<\/em>, Syracuse University Press, 2010. Gertrud Oelsner also points to the growing urbanisation of the period as a factor in the growing interest in landscape paintings, cf. Oelsner 2010, 57&amp;ndash;59\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">60<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Art historian W.J.T Mitchell defines such exercises of power as an imperialist performance capable of asserting control through a visualisation of the desired area \u2013 by designing symbolic ethnoscapes (to use a term coined by sociologist Athena S. Leoussi) to represent the nation.<sup id=\"footnote-61\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"61\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nW.J.T. Mitchell: &amp;lsquo;Imperical landscape&amp;rsquo; in W.J.T. The cliffs of M\u00f8n in particular, a geological manifestation of the deep roots of Danish history, are prominently featured in the selection of works he presented at Charlottenborg in the early 1850s: twenty-four out of twenty-five paintings depict Denmark; the last one is a scene from Venice. The ratio reflects the general trend in his total presentation of paintings at Charlottenborg.<sup id=\"footnote-67\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"67\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nCarl Reitzel: <em>Fortegnelse over Danske kunstneres arbejder paa de ved det Kgl. Skovgaard in Venice in the 1850s&amp;rsquo;, Perspective Journal, September&amp;nbsp;2020: <a href=&quot;https:\/\/perspectivejournal.dk\/en\/italy-love-denmark-wilhelm-marstrand-and-pc-skovgaard-venice-1850s&quot;>https:\/\/perspectivejournal.dk\/en\/italy-love-denmark-wilhelm-marstrand-and-pc-skovgaard-venice-1850s<\/a>\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">68<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2>Political portraits of a region<\/h2>\n<p>Art historians Karina Lykke Grand and Gertrud Oelsner have shown that the newly established and strengthened bourgeois elite often favoured site-specific subjects and that those who bought landscape paintings often lived very close to the geographical sites depicted.<sup id=\"footnote-69\" class=\"custom-footnotes-footnote\" data-sup-reference=\"69\" data-footnote-post-scope=\"post_3355\" data-sup-value=\"\nOelsner 2016, p. 111; Lykke Grand and Oelsner 2018, 173\n\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"footnote-content-post_3355\">69<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In this sense, landscape paintings were presumably not just a means of visualising and occupying the territory of the nation-state, but also of highlighting private property or the origins of individual families. Landscape paintings could serve to visualise power, property, memory and kinship for the bourgeois elite in the same way that classic history paintings traditionally served as instruments of power for monarchs and the aristocracy. A political portrait of a region, one might say. Skovgaard also took part in this regional and bourgeois exercise of power by painting the site of his own origins in Vejby in North Zealand, by painting the town Vejle for the leading National Liberal politician Orla Lehmann while he was a county governor there, and by painting the landscapes around the manor houses of Nys\u00f8 and Iselingen, both favourite haunts of the National Liberals of the era.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.perspectivejournal.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/fig._9.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" data-layout=\"width-50\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Fig. 8.<\/strong> P.C. Photo: Public domain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1853, Skovgaard\u2019s exhibits included <em>Nys\u00f8 on a Clear Autumn Day<\/em> (1853) [<strong>fig. 8<\/strong>], which may perhaps be most accurately described as a portrait of the manor of Nys\u00f8 (built 1671\u201373), which in the mid-nineteenth century formed the setting of many exchanges on art and culture. The sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770\u20131844) spent a great deal of time here during the last years of his life. Thorvaldsen presumably worked in the yellow wing seen to the left in the picture when he was not staying in the pavilion on the other side of the main building. Nys\u00f8 attracted a wide circle of national-minded artists who were well received by the lady of the manor, Christine Stampe (1797\u20131869), who was also the owner of this painting. Yet in spite of the long history of the building as the main seat of a barony, this is not an exalted, venerating portrait of the nobility and their possessions. The manor has an open, friendly air, forming a natural, down-to-earth part of everyday life with people (and livestock) from many different rungs of society. Busy women fetch water from the well, while a group of well-heeled citizens, some on foot, others on horseback, meet in conversation. The dog keeps an eye on the courtyard, the pigeons return home to their dovecote, and the goat is grazing. Everyone is going about their business without any fuss. Hence, this portrait of a manor house can be regarded as a kind of modern princely portrait, one in which Nys\u00f8 embodies the newfound power of the bourgeoisie. In the past, art had been used to visualise the power of state and king by means of political portraits, and this portrait of a mansion serves as a kind of continuation of this tradition. While it does not depict a specific person in power, it can still\u00a0 be interpreted as a depiction of a specific political idea and a specific political circle of people associated with this particular place.<\/p>\n<p>Skovgaard\u2019s Danish landscapes and portraits of particular regions are, then, tangible expressions of a more nationalistic love of one\u2019s nation, linked to a specific geography and history. By contrast, Marstrand did not regard genre scenes from Italy as incompatible with love of one\u2019s nation: to his mind they were part of the efforts to become truly proficient within his field, allowing him to position himself among peers across national borders. Both Skovgaard and Marstrand were, then, fuelled by a national cause. Accordingly, the differences between these two artists may not be immediately striking, but it is important to understand that there were indeed differences between them. Being aware of this difference helps call attention to the variety \u2013 in terms of subject matter and political attitudes \u2013 that can be found among artists who have gradually been lumped together in one barrel. And it also helps to highlight the professional and political discussions which art took part in and contributed to in the mid-nineteenth century.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>In 1854, <em>Dagbladet<\/em> proclaimed the existence of two cliques on the Danish art scene. The following year, the newspaper designed one of these cliques as National, the other as Cosmopolitan \u2013 and asserted that Marstrand and Skovgaard were both part of the National faction. Using Joep Leerssen\u2019s theories of the cultivation of culture and transnational cultural centres, this article has examined how Marstrand and Skovgaard\u2019s divergent perceptions of what constituted \u2018national\u2019 art were shaped and developed.<\/p>\n<p>Even though the two artists were on the same page in many regards \u2013 both were interested in furthering national causes, and both were part of the same network \u2013 a closer analysis of their overall choices of subject matter, of their letters and their trips abroad reveals that they were not motivated by the exact same national cause. Skovgaard was part of a movement that wanted to actively use art to promote specific social developments, a movement led by art historian N.L. H\u00f8yen. Marstrand also wanted to work actively with art, but restricted these activities to specifically art-related issues, and he explicitly stated that he did not want to mix politics and art. Thus, the two colleagues did not completely disagree, but they had different goals.<\/p>\n<p>The article also foregrounds how taking a critical look at the entrenched dichotomies of art historiography can unlock a better understanding of how artists collaborated, fought and evolved in their own time.
